The very first commercially available portable computer, the IBM 5100, made its debut in September 1975, based on IBM's SCAMP project of 1973. SCAMP stands for Special Computer APL Machine Portable and this prototype incorporated a PALM processor.
The early portable computers were not what today's consumer would class as portable, weighing in at over 10kg!

The clamshell design, used by virtually every modern laptop, was pioneered in 1982 by the GRiD Compass 1100. In 1983, the Gavilan SC become the first portable computer to be marketed under the term "laptop" and introduced the world to the touchpad.

Laptops already outnumber desktops in the workplace and the 3rd quarter of 2008 marked a defining moment in laptop history - it being the first time that laptop sales outstripped those of desktops.laptop, laptop
Intel sales forecasts envisage that in 2009 more laptops will be sold to the general population than desktops

A great example of this is the Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop. The sonoma chipset was designed just for laptops.
Dell laptops are always well equipped to ensure seamless operation. Internal wireless internet card comes as standard nowadays so every laptop you buy can ceonnect to the internet anywhere there is a wifi hotspot.
Other connectivity features of these Dell laptops include are a IEEE 1394 port, a Firewire port, an S-Video port and usually four USB ports. Some laptops also feature a slot for Secure Digital Memory cards.

Going back to the Dell inspiron 6000 computer, it came with either a 1.30 GHz Intel Celeron processor or a 1.60 GHz Pentium processor, similarly for the hard drive you had the choice between 30 GB to 80 GB. This exemplifies the flexibility you have when ordering a Dell laptop.
